Article Processing Charges paid by UCL (2013-2014)
Published:
I found an interesting dataset on Figshare showing how much University College London spent on Article Processing Charges (APCs). Its description says it should cover 1 April 2013 to 31 July 2014, but a few entries fall outside that window, so I suspect only that period is complete. I kept all the data anyway and added a linear regression line to the plot of total cost by date. On the face of it, costs seem to keep rising — though this is a short window, and I can’t say whether the trend held over the longer term.
Large journals (Nature Communications, PLOS One, and The Lancet) stand out as claiming more in APCs than the rest. The vast majority of articles in the dataset were published under a CC BY licence.
Feel free to dig into the plots yourself — they’re all interactive.
